Questions people ask, answered.
The game
What is Ponzi Potato?
A free browser game about doing one thing too well. You plant one potato, then build a farm, a snack empire, an investment fund that pays old investors with new investors’ money, and a pyramid of friends, until there’s nothing left in the universe that isn’t a potato. It’s a parody: nothing here is an investment.
Is it free?
Yes, all the way to the end. The black market sells shortcuts for real money, but you never need them, and anyone who uses one is labelled on the leaderboard.
How long does it take?
About an hour and a half to reach the end for the first time, a bit less with friends. Then you can start a new farm and try to be faster.
Do I need an account?
No. Your farm starts as a guest farm the moment you plant, tied to a cookie in this browser. Save it with your email address to keep it safe and play on other devices.
How do I play on another device?
Save your farm with your email address, then sign in on the other device: we email you a sign-in link, no password needed. Both devices play the same farm.
Does my farm keep growing when I’m away?
No. A farm only grows while you play, and rests about a minute after you stop, so you come back exactly where you left off. A farmhand from the black market keeps it going while you’re away.
How does the potato pyramid work?
Share your invite link. Every friend who makes it to the Family Farm makes your land hold 10% more and brings 10% more buyers, for up to ten friends. Their friends count too, a little: 2% each. Your friends get 10% for joining through you. It’s all in-game: nobody pays anybody.
Is this a real pyramid scheme?
No. It makes fun of one. No money is ever paid out to players, the bonuses are virtual potatoes, and they’re capped.
How does the leaderboard work?
Farms that reached the end come first, the fastest on top; everyone else is ranked by potatoes grown. There’s a board for every month and one for all time. Times that had rain or a farmhand say so, and players who bought advantages carry a badge with how much they spent. There are no prizes.
What happens when I start over?
You get a fresh farm. Your best score, your friends and your purchases stay; a farmhand stays behind with the old farm.
How do I change my nickname or delete my account?
Both on your account page. Deleting removes your email, farm and scores right away.
I found a bug.
Thanks! Email us at [email protected] with what you did and what happened. Please don’t use it to climb the leaderboard.
Paying and the black market
Is this real money?
Yes, you pay real money. What you get is virtual: it only exists in the game, has no cash value, and can’t be traded, transferred or paid out. Nothing here is an investment, and nobody ever gets money back out of the pyramid.
Isn’t this pay-to-win?
Some of it, openly. Rented friends and a farmhand get you to the end faster, and the crown is pure vanity. That’s why they’re called bribes: anyone who bought an advantage carries a badge on the leaderboard with how much they spent, and the leaderboard has no prizes. Rain is the exception: it speeds up every farm, so it doesn’t count.
Why do I need to save my farm first?
A guest farm lives in one browser cookie. Clear it, and the farm and everything you bought would be gone. With an email address, purchases belong to your account, and you can sign in on any device.
How do I pay, and who sees my card?
Checkout is run by Stripe through Link, which sells the items as merchant of record. You can pay by card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or Link, depending on your device and country, and the price may be shown in your currency. We never see your card details. On your statement it shows up as LINK.COM*.
Is tax included?
Link works out sales tax or VAT for where you live and shows the total at checkout before you pay. Your receipt comes from Link by email.
I paid. Where’s my item?
It usually arrives within seconds of paying. If it isn’t there, reload the game. Your account page lists every purchase and whether it was delivered. Still missing after a few minutes? Email [email protected] with the time of purchase and we’ll sort it out.
What happens to my purchases when I start over?
Rented friends belong to your account and stay with you on every new farm. A farmhand works for the farm it was hired for and leaves when you start over. The crown stays yours until someone buys it, and rain keeps falling on everyone until it runs out.
Somebody took my crown. Do I get my money back?
No, that’s the game: every sale costs a dollar more than the last, and whoever paid last wears it. You can always take it back, for a dollar more.
Can I get a refund?
Items arrive the moment you pay, so the right to withdraw from a digital purchase doesn’t apply where the law allows that. If something went wrong, contact Link support (the link is in your receipt) or email us. If part of an order can’t be delivered, for example because rain is fully booked, that part is refunded automatically. A refunded item is taken back.
Can I give an item to a friend?
Not directly: items go to the account that bought them. Rain helps every farm, friends included. And inviting a real friend gives you the same bonus as renting one.
I’m under 16. Can I buy something?
Only with a parent’s or guardian’s permission. The whole game is free to play to the end without spending anything.
